Web3 has created a new era of decentralized finance, democratizing financial access. However, it has fallen short in generating mass consumer applications and remains largely centered around finance. We believe blockchain technology is a cornerstone for the future of new, open Internet applications.

Today, there are limits to what you can build on-chain. Many factors constrain this, from the cost of running applications to the fundamental performance limitations of existing blockchains. We believe that new technologies can unlock a new class of real-time applications that normally must be built on Web2 foundations. Enabling these systems to be built on-chain will allow the free movement of businesses and users between online platforms, creating what we call a true virtual society.

We are building Somnia, a fast and cost-effective EVM-based blockchain, to achieve this. Somnia is a layer-one blockchain with full EVM compatibility, capable of processing over 1,000,000 transactions per second with sub-second latency and low fees. This will unlock a new wave of on-chain applications. Initially, we are focusing on gaming, metaverse, and social experiences. But we are not even 100% certain of what can be built with the technology we are creating.

Somnia is being developed by Somnia Foundation backed by Improbable, a British start-up that has been at the forefront of building virtual worlds for over a decade. Somnia received initial funding from MSquared, which raised $150 million in funding from a16z crypto, SoftBank, Mirana Ventures, CMT Digital, and SIG.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Finance Director to lead and scale our financial operations in a Web3 environment. This role covers forecasting and budgeting, managing both fiat and crypto treasury, ensuring compliance, and building processes that drive financial discipline as we grow. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in traditional finance combined with hands-on experience navigating the unique financial, accounting, and operational challenges of crypto, blockchain, and non-custodial wallets.

As Finance Director, you will work closely with the Finance team and report directly to the COO, playing a critical role in shaping financial strategy, driving operational excellence, and safeguarding company assets in a fast-moving Web3 landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead company-wide financial planning & forecasting across fiat and crypto, including burn rate, runway, and scenario modeling.

• Set up and manage proprietary fiat and crypto treasury capital and ensure asset diversification.

• Identify financial risks and opportunities, proposing strategies for mitigation and growth.

• Ensure accurate reporting of on-chain/off-chain transactions, token flows, and crypto accounting treatment.

• Drive compliance with tax, regulatory, and audit requirements across multiple jurisdictions.

• Provide clear financial insights and reporting to the COO, leadership team, board, and investors.

• Implement and improve financial systems, tools, and internal controls to support scale.

• Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance team to deliver high-quality execution.

Requirements:

• 8+ years in finance, accounting, or treasury, with at least 3+ years in crypto/Web3.

• Proven expertise in financial modeling and forecasting, including runway and token economics.

• In-depth knowledge of treasury management and asset diversification strategies.

• Strong understanding of GAAP/IFRS standards and crypto-specific accounting practices.

• Familiarity with cross-border tax, regulatory, and compliance requirements for crypto assets.

• Demonstrated ability to design and enforce financial processes, policies, and risk controls.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex financials to non-finance stakeholders.

• Leadership experience managing finance teams and collaborating cross-functionally.
